Morphology of a spin-coated, polycrystalline molecular semiconductor film.In collaboration with the Optoelectronics group we are investigating spin transport in organic semiconductors and conjugated polymers. These materials potentially offer long spin diffusion lengths and coherence times due to the weak spin-orbit coupling in these carbon-based semiconductors. However, their fundamental spin physics and how it can be affected by molecular design is still poorly understood. In this research we are combining our expertise in the physics of high mobility organic materials as gained in the context of charge-based devices such as transistors, LEDs and solar cells with advanced concepts and experimental methods developed for characterising and exploiting spin transport in inorganic semiconductors.
