We are seeking applicants for a PhD Fellowship in the framework of the MSCA Doctoral Network MASAUTO: MAterials for Smarter AUTOnomous sensors. MASAUTO is a research and training program for 12 Doctoral Candidates (DCs), focusing on developing a new generation of materials that will overcome the current bottlenecks in the capability and capacity of autonomous sensors. The ongoing exponential growth of the internet of things (IoT) ecosystem - which could reach a trillion devices in the near future - poses a serious challenge in terms of powering and interconnecting the underlying devices. The full potential of the IoT will only be achievable if devices i) have a reliable and sustainable autonomous power supply, and ii) are capable of processing information with reduced power requirements. A promising approach to address the first challenge is the use of an energy harvester-supercapacitor combination, while for the second challenge a promising strategy is the use of non-volatile random-access memories. It is, therefore, crucial to develop materials for energy harvesting and storage, as well as low power electronics. Graduates of MASAUTO will be well-prepared for a career in as well as outside academia with an innovative and beyond state-of-the-art view on different aspects of materials and device development for smart sensors applications. MASAUTO offers DCs unique exciting opportunities, including:

• A project as a Marie Sklodowska Curie trainee in one of the participating institutions with the objective of becoming an experienced researcher and obtaining a doctoral degree (PhD);

• State-of-the art, exciting research in an international consortium with highly integrated projects;

• Solid multidisciplinary scientific training, from basic science to industrial applications, along with a complementary training in transferable skills, such as communication, entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights and ethics;

• A research training period in another consortium member's lab, performed in a different country;

• Gross Salary according to EU guidelines for Marie Sklodowska Curie trainees, including mobility payments and family allowances where applicable. The salary consists of the gross Monthly Living Allowance of 3.400,00 EUR per month pondered by the EU correction coefficient (specific for the countries where the hosting Institutions are located). In addition, a Mobility Allowance of 600,00 EUR per month will be paid, and also possibly another 660,00 EUR per month of Family Allowance depending on marital status. The DC salary is subject to local tax, employee and employer social contributions, and other deductions following national regulations.

The Fellowship is offered in conjunction with a PhD position, subject to the Fellow satisfying the University's admissions requirements for PhD study, and candidates should submit a formal application to the University of Cambridge for a PhD in Physics. The deadline for this is 16th May 2025.

The successful candidate will have an MSc degree in Physics, Chemistry or related field. You will also have outstanding academic records, and excellent communication skills in oral and written English.

The Role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated HR Administrator to join a newly restructured, and vibrant HR team. The successful applicant will join a busy team of HR Administrators and Senior HR Coordinators who provide full support (both in person and via email) for all HR functions in the Department.

You will work closely with the Senior HR Coordinators and HR Manager to provide a professional and efficient HR service including all aspects of HR administration. Reporting directly to one of our Senior HR Coordinators, the role will provide clear and accurate advice on procedure, co-ordinating the recruitment and visitor processes and the onboarding of new starters (including dealing with all immigration and pre-employment paperwork). The position is busy and varied and has plenty of scope for training and development.

During the six month probation period, the roleholder will be required to work in the office full-time (Monday to Friday). After successful completion of their probation, we will agree up to 2 days per week working from home. This arrangement will depend on the operational needs of the team.

About You:

The ideal candidate will have HR administration experience but we will consider candidates who have excellent administrative and organisational skills; the ability to produce work to a high level of accuracy is essential.

The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and administrative skills, and you will have the ability to work well within a busy team, fostering good working relationships with a wide variety of people from all over the world. You should be proficient in all standard Microsoft Office packages, highly organised, self-motivated, and able to prioritise your workload within a demanding environment. Tact and discretion are essential when handling confidential personal information. Previous HR experience whilst desirable is not essential.

The High Energy Physics group at the University of Cambridge seeks to appoint an outstanding researcher to join its effort on the LHCb experiment. One full-time-equivalent position is envisaged to work on physics analysis of charmless B decays as part of the ERC-funded KstarKstar project, led by Dr Matt Kenzie.

The successful candidate will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Particles Physics (or a closely related area) with a proven track record in scientific investigation from the conception stage through to publication, with clearly defined individual contributions as demonstrated by publications in major journals. They will have a strong background in data analysis techniques and algorithms in experimental particle physics and experience in computing and advanced programming in C++ or Python. They will also show evidence of ability to identify new research opportunities or develop new techniques. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in leadership (or evidence of future leadership potential), experience in taking initiative and/or developing own ideas independently, and experience of working in an international collaborative environment.

Candidates will also have demonstrated the ability to write reports, present results and contribute to academic papers, as well as to work efficiently as part of a team. The role holder will be located at the Department of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge CB3 0HE, UK, with the possibility of both long-term-attachment and shorter travel to CERN where appropriate.

With this exciting move, we are launching a room hire service across our estate, designed to appeal to university partners, as well as commercial and industry clients.

We are seeking an Events Coordinator, who in conjunction with our new Events Manager, will help play a central role in this initiative. In this support role, you will be responsible for the coordination and administration of a new events service to enhance the department's engagement with students, staff, alumni, and external stakeholders. Your role will involve planning, organising and execution of a diverse range of events, from large-scale symposia and conferences to meetings arranged by internal colleagues and external clients.

Essential to the role is the delivery of an exceptional meeting and events experience at the Ray Dolby Centre and other Physics' locations. The successful candidate will work closely with both colleagues and contractors involved in operational delivery, communicating effectively to ensure organisers expectations are met and relationships built and maintained. Ensuring that all event details are gathered and shared using the relevant tools, systems and databases, to deliver events which run smoothly and are effectively managed and supported. In liaison with the Events Manager you will collaborate with the wider Communication and Facilities teams to ensure the highest standards of service and hospitality are delivered for both internal and external events. Building and nurturing relationships with new and existing clients, you will communicate confidently and effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders.

To excel in this role, you will need excellent general administrative and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise your own workload and to meet agreed deadlines. The roleholder will also be a strong communicator, with exceptional attention to detail and a talent for bringing events to life from the first client interaction through to the handover to our front-of-house team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a busy, supportive office environment.

Demonstrated experience in R&D project management is critical. Experience in polymer chemistry and/or in cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibers is a significant bonus.

Research Associate in the Thermoelectric Physics of Organic Semiconductors (Fixed Term)

The Optoelectronics Group of the Department of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, invites applications for a Research Associate to work on an ERC Advanced Grant led by Professor Henning Sirringhaus. The project is focused on studying the thermoelectric physics of organic semiconductors and related functional materials. The project is aiming to achieve a fundamental understanding of how the thermoelectric properties of organic semiconductors can be enhanced. The role holder is expected to lead the thermoelectric materials and device investigations.

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD degree in a relevant field such as Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Electrical Engineering. You will have a strong background in semiconductor physics and experience in the transport and device physics of thermoelectric materials, such as organic semiconductors.

Appointment as a Research Associate is dependent on having a PhD including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD (in which case appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded). The role-holder will be expected to participate actively in collaborations with other post-doctoral researchers and PhD students working on related projects, as well as national and international partners.

Research Associate in Quantum Networks using Diamond Spin Qubits (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Associate in Quantum Networks using Diamond Spin Qubits.

The aim of the role is to realise functional quantum memories using the electronic and nuclear spins of tin-vacancy (SnV) colour centres in nanofabricated diamond chips, using quantum optical control from single confined spins using both optical and microwave fields. The research topics will include the realisation of efficient photon emission, high-fidelity coherent spin control using optical and microwave control, demonstration of spin-photon quantum entanglement, and quantum information transfer and storage in nuclear spin registers.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Physics, ideally in Applied Physics or Engineering, with a proven track record in quantum optics, quantum control and preferably in solid-state spin-photon interfaces. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in coherent spin control and single-photon interference as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of software-hardware interface experience is desirable.

You will have proven organisational, communication and team working skills. You will also have the ability to perform coding relevant to analysis and instrumentation work, to design mechanical and electrical components of the experimental apparatus, and to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent upon having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be uplifted to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

The Department: The Cavendish Laboratory is the place of pioneering physics, that's been at the forefront of scientific discovery for 150 years, and will continue to be, because we never sit still. The Cavendish Laboratory has made several important discoveries, including: the discovery of the electron (1897), the neutron (1932), the structure of DNA (1953); thirty Cavendish researchers have won Nobel Prizes. We're trailblazers who continue to extend the frontiers of physics. We are looking forward moving into our new state-of-the-art, multi-million pound Ray Dolby Centre which will be the centrepiece of the new Cavendish Laboratory and we started moving in from November 2024. This is an exciting and challenging time for the Department, and we would like to find a highly motivated individual with a positive attitude towards change and development to join us.

The Role: The successful applicant will join a small friendly team within the Postgraduate office. You will provide a complete service to all postgraduate students from initial enquiries, admissions and funding applications, through to monitoring reports and degree awards. The position is busy and varied and has plenty of scope for training and development.

About You: You will have previous administrative experience in a Higher Education setting and ideally knowledge of postgraduate education programmes. You will have excellent organisational and time management skills; the ability to produce work to a high level of accuracy is essential.

You will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and have the ability to work well within a busy team, building positive working relationships within the Department and University. Discretion, diplomacy and empathy are also essential due to the nature of the role and working closely with students. You should be proficient in all standard Microsoft Office packages, highly organised, self-motivated, and able to prioritise your workload within a demanding environment.

The department operates a hybrid working policy, but we expect employees to be on site full time during the probation period to facilitate training and build working relationships. Once the probation has been completed successfully, you may be able to work off site up to two days per week, depending on operational need.

We are seeking a Purchasing Administrator to join the department's Finance Team as part of a new 'core' structure for purchasing in the department. You will undertake a full range of purchasing and procurement duties within the Department's Finance Office, following University policy, procedures and best practice.

Reporting to the departmental Purchasing Supervisor, the role-holder will ensure that all purchasing adheres to best practice and guidelines issued by the University Procurement Service, in particular obtaining best value for the University whilst maintaining awareness of sustainability goals.

The successful candidate will be able communicate and work effectively with multiple stakeholder groups to deliver efficient ways to source goods and services for the wide range of activities undertaken by the department.

You will ideally be educated to first degree level in a numerate discipline or with equivalent level of practical experience. The role involves day-to-day contact with academic, technical and administrative staff and students and requires the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.

The Role

You will provide direct purchasing and procurement support to the Department, including:

  • Advise on procurement and logistics procedures in line with best practice and University regulations, maintain documentation covering local procedures

Research Assistant/Research Associate (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in Experimental High Energy Physics in the High Energy Physics (HEP) Group at the Cavendish Laboratory. The post holder will make leading contributions on two fronts within the ATLAS experiment: the commissioning and operating of the upgraded L1 Calorimeter (L1Calo) Trigger and the searches for massive long-lived particles. It is intended that (subject to LTA funding being awarded by the ATLAS collaboration to the successful applicant after appointment) the post holder will be based in CERN for the majority of their tenure. Should this not happen they will be based in Cambridge.

The successful candidate will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or a related discipline. Experience with programming in C++ and Python is essential along with an interest and desire to work with hardware description languages like VHDL. A willingness to work with fast custom digital electronics systems such as those connected to L1Calo, and a willingness to learn about development and debugging of firmware needed to support L1Calo systems are also essential. The candidate should possess strong organisational, communication and teamworking skills along with the ability to write reports, present results and contribute to academic papers.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent upon having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be uplifted to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Electronics Engineer

The High Energy Physics group in the Department of Physics has a vacancy for an Electronics Engineer to join our team developing state-of-the-art electronics for particle physics experiments. This is an exciting opportunity to make important contributions to the upgrades of the Large Hadron Collider detectors at CERN, the DUNE neutrino experiment in the US, and to participate in future Research and Development initiatives.

The successful candidate will work within a small team comprising our lead engineers and technicians and will primarily take responsibility for the production, testing and commissioning of the upgrade electronics for the ATLAS and LHCb detectors. The role will involve close collaboration with physicists within the HEP group and with our partners (Engineers and Physicists) in UK Universities and more widely across the international research collaborations.

You will have an excellent understanding of the challenges of working with high-speed data transmission systems, high-performance FPGAs, as well as embedded control software. An aptitude for fault analysis and diagnosis are an essential requirement for the production phase and the provision of custom instrumentation for testing will require the candidate to have well-developed practical design skills. Control software and firmware skills are highly desirable. A methodical and organised approach and excellent communication skills are essential.

You will be expected to hold a minimum of HNC in electronics, and a relevant degree is highly desirable.

Limited funding: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2025 in the first instance, with an expectation of a further 4 years funding (to be confirmed).

We are seeking a University Assistant/Associate Professor in Data-Driven Radio Astronomy/Cosmology.

Modern radio astronomy/cosmology, powered by advances in big data analysis, is at the forefront of studies to unlock the answers to some of the most fundamental physics questions in our time. We are looking for a talented early career scientist to promote and develop ambitious programmes aimed at investigating the universe via radio observations. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the development of advanced data analysis for radio astronomy/cosmology (e.g. statistical analysis, machine learning, etc), in collaboration with observational/experimental activities in Cambridge. In particular, the global astrophysics community is eagerly awaiting the start of scientific observations of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (www.skao.int), commonly known as SKA, the largest and most powerful radio telescope ever to exist, currently under construction. The role holder will have the opportunity to take a leading role in our existing SKA activities and grants (eg SKA development grants). Furthermore, we expect the successful candidate to be well-placed to lead development efforts for SKA Phase II, expected to start within the coming years.

The role holder will be a world-class researcher in one of the following areas (corresponding to Science Working Groups for the SKA project - www.skao.int/en/science-users/science-working-groups): Cosmology, Epoch-Of-Reionization, Gravitational Waves, Pulsars, Transients.

The role holder will be based in the Department of Physics in the Astrophysics Group, located in the Battcock Centre for Experimental Astrophysics and the Kavli Institute for Cosmology in Cambridge.

Data-driven science and radio astronomy/cosmology with the SKA, are areas of very active research in Cambridge, with scientists leading several ongoing projects and the development of new facilities that are expected to be ground-breaking in this research field (see e.g. www.astro.phy.cam.ac.uk, www.kicc.cam.ac.uk/ and www.cavendishradiocosmology.com).

Applicants should have a PhD in physics (or a related discipline), a strong record of relevant research, and must show evidence of enthusiasm and ability to teach a wide range of Physics courses successfully at both undergraduate and master's level.

The postholder will be working alongside a team of other research laboratory technicians to support research activities. The postholder will also be responsible for maintaining existing equipment in a safe and effective state.

The role requires a high level of technical skill. The roleholder will work flexibly to respond to the changing needs of the research and will set their own priorities to achieve the best overall research outcomes. The roleholder will be expected to help mentor, teach and supervise a cohort of apprentices in best practices.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, proven problem solving abilities, with the ability to manage their own time and priorities.

The postholder will hold a BTEC HNC or Higher Diploma in a laboratory technician qualification or a similar science related discipline. Experience with mentoring and teaching apprentices is desirable.
