MPhil in Data Intensive Science (10 months)

The MPhil in Data Intensive Science is a 10-month full-time Master's Degree. The course consists of both taught elements and a data analysis project. The taught elements comprise both major and minor modules, with the former covering the essential skills for data science in research computing, statistical data analysis, and machine learning and AI and the later covering the detailed application of these skills to specific scientific research frontiers.

There is also a data analysis project which is focused on investigating the reproducibility of a key scientific data analysis in the literature.  These projects will be designed to be open-ended so students can improve or extend what is already published in the literature. Students will work independently on their projects and will be offered individual supervisions with the responsible academic advisor, as well as further advice and support from the teaching team.

Apart from the taught element and the project, there are several non-assessed courses and programmes designed to support the students which may include: seminar series, transferable skills workshops, industry led modules, and short courses on advanced topics.

For admission to the MPhil degree programmes the Postgraduate Admissions Office normally require applicants to have followed a three-year first degree and to have achieved or be about to achieve at least a good upper second class honours degree from a UK university or the equivalent. All applicants are assessed individually on the basis of their academic records.
