Prof Mick Brown FRS

Emeritus Professor of Physics

Professor Mick Brown FRS is an Emeritus Professor of Physics.

He holds a B.A.Sc. (Toronto), Ph.D. (Birmingham) and M.A., D.Sc., (Cantab).

Professor Brown is internationally recognised for his fundamental contributions to the physics of materials deformation, particularly in the areas of plasticity, creep, fatigue, and ductile fracture. His work has introduced new conceptual frameworks across all four fields and has had a lasting influence on how deformation processes in crystalline materials are understood.

He has also carried out pioneering research on the quantitative application of electron microscopy, developing methods to measure strain fields associated with precipitates and dislocations. His studies of damage clusters in irradiated materials, including their energetics and growth kinetics, have significantly advanced understanding in this area.

Professor Brown has played a leading role in the development of high-resolution scanning microscopy and in setting up the SuperSTEM laboratory at Daresbury in Cheshire, now an international centre for frontline analytical electron microscopy.
