At the Cavendish Laboratory we nurture an open and inclusive environment.
From the building itself – designed so that we all come and go through the same entrance – there is a spirit of equality that feeds into the work we do and the people with whom we mingle and collaborate.
It’s an environment where you can do your best work, alongside your peers – who happen to be the brightest global minds in physics.
In what has historically been seen as a male-dominated discipline, we are proud of our efforts in recent years to increase the representation of women throughout our physics teaching and research activities.
Work is always continuing in this area and we have already seen how culture change at every level has greatly improved equality, diversity and inclusiveness within the Department.
The Cavendish is the holder of a prestigious Athena SWAN Silver award and is an Institute of Physics’ Project Juno Champion.

The University of Cambridge’s policies on harassment and sexual misconduct can be found on the Student Support website. This page provides clear guidance for students, and is also relevant to staff, on how the University prevents and responds to harassment and sexual misconduct.
It sets out expectations for professional conduct and personal relationships, outlines the training staff receive to recognise and address concerns, and explains how they can support students to maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive community for all.
