The Royal Society’s University Research Fellowship (URF) supports early-career scientists with exceptional promise who are ready to transition to independent research leadership. The scheme provides long-term support for developing an independent research programme at a UK host institution.
The Department runs an internal process to manage applications. If you wish to apply, please let us know by 10 July 2026 via email to fellowships@phy.cam.ac.uk along with the name of the member of Faculty who has agreed to host you for the duration of the Fellowship.
Applicants failing to notify by this date will not be supported.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the scheme notes. The Royal Society’s guidance for the 2027 round will be published on 14 July 2026 but you can find the previous round on the Royal Society website.
The Ernest Rutherford Fellowships supports early career researchers who are ready to transition to independent research leadership. The scheme provides support for up to five years.
Applicants should complete the online Expression of Interest form. You will need to identify a member of Faculty who has agreed to host you for the duration of the Fellowship, and submit a CV, Publication list as well as a short summary of your research proposal to Fellowships@phy.cam.ac.uk
