Postgraduate

Why choose research in physics at Cambridge?

As a postgraduate at the Cavendish Laboratory you’ll  be part of an insatiably curious community of scientists, who see the potential of academic research to touch every aspect of our lives and offer solutions to the biggest challenges we face as a society.

From studies of the very early universe, to quantum and condensed-matter physics, pursuing physics to postgraduate level gives you an opportunity to strengthen your research skills, intensify your knowledge and progress your career.

A breadth of programmes across the complete spectrum of physics

Being a postgraduate student at the Cavendish Laboratory is a unique experience. Building upon our illustrious history of discovery and innovation, we offer 10 research themes in which we address the most important questions in science. State-of-the-art facilities – including the new Ray Dolby Centre and the Collaborative R&D Environment (CORDE) – create an environment for new breakthroughs to happen.

You can focus on one chosen area of research with our PhD in Physics or MPhil in Physics, where you’ll interact closely with world-class academic staff, post-doctoral workers, and research fellows in an environment where you can expect to challenge and be challenged.

Or you can opt to explore broader topics alongside a deep dive into research through our specialist PhD and taught programmes on Data Intensive Science, Scientific Computing and Nanotechnology.

See below for further details on each of the programmes and how to apply.
