Dr Harry Cliff
Ernest Rutherford Fellow and Public Physicist
Harry Cliff is an experimental particle physicist in the High Energy Physics Group at the University of Cambridge and a member of the LHCb experiment at CERN. His research uses rare decays of beauty hadrons to search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. By making precision measurements of processes that occur only through quantum fluctuations, his work probes energy scales far beyond the direct reach of current particle accelerators. He has led a range of measurements of rare decays and tests of lepton flavour universality and serves as Rare Decays Physics Convener for the LHCb Collaboration.
Alongside his research, Harry is the Cavendish Laboratory’s Public Physicist, responsible for the recent re-development of the Cavendish Museum and management of the Cavendish Collection of historic scientific instruments. He is also editor of CavMag, the Laboratory’s annual magazine. He is the author of the popular science books Space Oddities and How to Make an Apple Pie from Scratch, and has given public lectures for organisations including TED and the Royal Institution.
