Dr. Sutherland holds a BSc, MSc and PhD in physics from the University of Toronto. He moved to the UK as an NSERC of Canada postdoctoral research fellow in 2004, and was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2006. He is currently the Senior Tutor of Trinity Hall and an Affiliated Lecturer in the Department.
Dr. Sutherland’s research involves the study of materials that exhibited strongly correlated electron behaviour, including superconductors, topological insulators and novel magnetic materials. He runs the Quantum Matter Group’s ‘Big Fridge’ cryogenic facility, which features a superconducting magnet with fields up to 20.4 T, and a dilution refrigerator capable of temperatures as low as a few mK.
