Jesús Arjona Martínez, a PhD student, has been recognised as one of the ‘Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2024’ for his current research at the Cavendish Laboratory. Martinez, part of Professor Mete Atatüre’s research group, focuses on the development of quantum communication aimed at creating perfectly secure digital communication in future.

The Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2024 list highlights rising stars in various industries from music and media to sport and science. Martínez has been selected within the science category for his current research in quantum communication, which was inspired by his previous academic projects.

“I certainly did not imagine this,” he reacted upon finding out about the news.  “I discovered last year that there tends to be two or three PhD students named every year within the science category, and I decided to give it a try. I am certain that the broad impact of the field of quantum computing and communication was a key component in my selection.”

Quantum communication holds the promise of transforming digital communication in future. However, scalability remains a significant challenge in current implementations. Martínez, who works in Mete Atatüre’s group, in collaboration with team members at MIT, addresses this challenge by leveraging a new quantum emitter called the tin-vacancy centre, integrated within an extremely pure and tiny diamond. This innovation offers exceptional stability, facilitating its replication and integration on a scalable level. This is similar to the miniaturisation of computer chips, but here light, instead of electricity, is wired around to transfer quantum information.

"As an excellent future scientist, there is no doubt that Jesús will be instrumental in furthering the research in quantum communication at scale in the future," commended Professor Mete Atatüre, Martínez’s supervisor and Head of Department, Cavendish Laboratory.

“He is an invaluable member of the group, and we see this as just the start of what lies ahead. We extend our best wishes to him for the future.”

Martinez's recognition underscores Cavendish Laboratory's commitment to pioneering research in quantum communication and its implications for future technological advancements. His work exemplifies the collaborative efforts driving innovation in this transformative field, promising a new era of secure and efficient digital communication networks.
