Dr Munarwar Chaudhri

Biography
After completing B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. (physics) from the University of Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan in 1959 and 1961, respectively, from 1961 to 1966 Dr. Chaudhri carried out research into Geiger Muller counters and the effects of impact of 1 MeV protons on metals at the High Tension Laboratory, Government College, Lahore, Pakistan. He came to the Cavendish on a Saigol Foundation Merit scholarship in 1966 to do a Ph.D. under Professor Bowden in the PCS group. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1970 and has since been employed at the Cavendish by the University. He became a University Reader in 2001. He was appointed Head of PCS group in 2003 by Professor Longair, the Head of Department of Physics.
In 1990 Dr Chaudhri was elected Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge.
In 2024 Dr Chaudhri accepted an invitation by Durham Institute of Research and Innovation to become a Fellow of the Institute.
Research
Nanomechanical properties of materials, studies of very fast phenomena using high-speed photography, pressure-induced phase transitions in semiconductors, and fast reactions in solids.
Research Group – Materials Group and then joined Thin Film Magnetism Group after retiring in 2009.
