The place of pioneering physics

What makes the Cavendish … different?

A unique heritage that shapes our future. Since 1874 the Cavendish has been at the forefront of scientific discovery. The electron, the neutron, the structure of DNA. 31 Nobel Prize winners. These past successes spur us on to continually redefine and expand the frontiers of physics and its role in the world, passing on our expertise and instinctive curiosity from one generation to the next.

A breadth of physics that means breadth of impact. Our expansive, interdisciplinary approach and world-class teaching sees us connect a diversity of viewpoints, skills and influences across a breadth of disciplines. We piece these together to create new possibilities in business, education, communities and wider society.

An unmatched scale of investment. Our purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities offer a collaborative environment where we can do our very best work, in new and sometimes surprising ways. We also invest in our people.

We have a number of benefactors – including the Dolby’s Family Fund which has allowed for academic chairs, post-doctoral research fellowships and PhD studentships – and our  apprenticeship schemes nurture the talent of tomorrow.

150 years of scientific excellence

We are celebrating our anniversary by sharing Cavendish stories that have characterised our institution since 1874.
