Department of Physics

The Cavendish Laboratory

It has just been announced that our own Professor Mark Thomson will be taking over as the Executive Chair of the Science and Technology Funding Council, STFC, replacing the current Chief Executive and Council Chair roles in the new UKRI structure. I am sure that everyone will wish to join me in offering him our congratulations and best wishes in this challenging job.

As many of you will know, Mark has been serving as the co-spokesperson of the DUNE Collaboration, the largest international experiment in neutrino physics, based in the USA. He played a major role in securing the recent investment of £65m in neutrino physics by the UK government. It is very good news for Cambridge and the UK science community that someone of his calibre will be taking such a key role in the management of the science base.
