In September 2016, Felix was awarded a Winton Fellowship and will start his research group at the Cavendish Laboratory.

We will investigate the fundamental photo-physics of novel semiconductors with focus on the connection between material structure and optical properties.

Felix is looking for PhD students with interest in ultrafast laser spectroscopy, advanced optical microscopy or nano-fabrication.

Felix received his PhD in 2013 from Ludwig-Maximillians-Universität München under the supervision of Prof. Jochen Feldmann, where he studied the effects of molecular doping on charge separation processes in organic semiconductors. He demonstrated that doping of polymer-fullerene blends for photovoltaic applications reduces recombination through interfacial charge-transfer states and enhances charge generation, which opened new routes to enhanced solar cell performance.

In April 2013, Felix joined the Optoelectronics Group at the University of Cambridge (Prof. Sir Richard Friend) as a postdoctoral research associate, where he investigates the photophysics of novel semiconductor materials, such as hybrid metal-halide perovskites. These solution-processed materials form highly crystalline thin films, which give efficient photovoltaic performance in solar cells. He demonstrated that hybrid perovskites show highly efficient photoluminescence together with semiconducting properties comparable to melt-grown semiconductors. He reported optically-pumped lasing in the first microcavity using hybrid perovskites as gain medium.

In 2014, Felix was awarded a Herchel Smith Research Fellowship.

Research Interests

I am interested in the photo-physics of excited states and their recombination in novel semiconductor materials. In particular, my research explores how structure affects the photo-physics of materials and how this controls the processes at interfaces between materials with different excited state properties.

These processes can be investigated with advanced ultra-fast laser spectroscopy, such as femtosecond transient absorption and transient photoluminescence. These techniques provide specialized tools to monitor the excited state populations in thin films and operating optoelectronic devices, which gives unique insights on the photo-physical mechanisms controlling device operation and material performance.
