Quantum optics and cold atoms

Research

We pursue experimental research in quantum optics, atomic quantum gases, and quantum information processing.

The central aim of the research programme is to understand correlation phenomena and entanglement of cold bosonic and fermionic atoms as well as single trapped ions. In particular, we focus on quantum gases in optical lattices which provide a fascinating link between atomic physics and condensed matter physics. This has the prospect of unravelling long-standing problems in quantum many-body physics in a completely new approach. The research is also geared towards quantum information processing using single trapped ions and to understand coherence and decoherence mechanisms when ions are coupled to a dissipative environment.
