We are pleased to announce that the following members of the Cavendish Laboratory are to receive Awards from the Institute of Physics.
Professor Michael Koehl, of the Atomic, Mesoscopic and Optical Physics Group, is to be awarded the Thomson Medal and Prize for his pioneering experimental work in Bose-Einstein condensates and cold Fermi gases.
Dr Suchitra E. Sebastian, a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Quantum Matter Group, is to be awarded the Moseley Medal and Prize for her important discoveries in frustrated quantum magnets, heavy fermion systems and high temperature semiconductors.
Dr Lisa Jardine-Wright, the Department's Outreach Officer, is to be awarded the IOP's Philips Award. Lisa has worked tirelessly and creatively to expand the reach and range of activities organised by the East Anglia Branch, most recently as the branch’s chair. As part of her outreach activities at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, Lisa runs the annual “Physics at Work” week, attracting more than 2000 secondary students from across southern England. Although this has run for many years, she makes a huge commitment to ensuring, and expanding, its success each year. She has also taken the branch’s annual physics event, historically held in Cambridge, to a local school in Ipswich, with further expansion to Norwich this year. The event attracts young children from age five and up with a range of activities, talks and demonstrations, with the most recent attracting approximately 400 people. Lisa has also pioneered the use of video conferencing tools to reach schools across the region and well beyond, and she instigated the “Three Minute Wonder” competition held in January.
In addition, two former Cavendish PhD students are to receive awards, namely Dr Meera Parish, the Maxwell Medal and Prize and Dr Henry Snaith, the Paterson Medal and Prize.
Many congratulations to them all.
Prof James Stirling CBE FRS
