| We note with sadness the passing of Dr Ian Nicol, a stalwart member of
the Cavendish, who died on February 18th at the age of 87. He was a research student of
Lawrence Bragg from 1946-1950, returning to the Department as Secretary
from 1960 to 1966. He then became Secretary to the School of Physical
Sciences, and was Secretary General of the Faculties from 1972 until his retirement in 1986.
Other service to the physics community included Vice President of the
Institute of Physics from 1966-70 and Chairman of the Physics
sub-committee of the Schools Council Science Subject Committee,
1965-69. He was awarded a C.B.E. in 1985 for services to education. Ian
did splendid service to the Department and the University, and helped
establish the Cavendish as we see it now. The Times has published a full obituary which can be found here. |
