Head of Department's Office

The Head of Department, Prof Andy Parker, is responsible for all aspects of teaching and research within the Department. His primary research area is experimental particle physics. He is supported by the Deputy Head (Resources), Prof Neil Greenham and the Deputy Head (Education), Prof Chris Haniff. Prof Greenham chairs the Finance Committee and allocates space and other resources. Prof Haniff has oversight of all educational matters working closely with the Director of Undergraduate Teaching, Prof John Richer. The Department has an ambitious Development Programme aiming to re-build the core of the laboratory on an adjacent site. Professor Malcolm Longair works with the Head of Department to drive this forward as flag-ship project within the University’s Development campaign.

The Secretary of the Department (Strategy) , Mr Robert Hay, works with the Head of  Department supporting the Development Campaign, fundraising and the development of the new laboratory; strategic planning, relationships with the School and other external bodies, external funders policies and priorities and special projects.

Key Forms

Requests for Short Leave

Requests for Short Leave for periods of between two and fourteen nights during Full Term are authorised by the Head of Department following approval by the Director of Undergraduate Teaching. Requests should be made using the Short Leave Application Form. Absence from the Department impacting on teaching should also be requested using the Form and approved by the Deputy Head of Department (Teaching). Permission is not needed for an absence of two nights or less provided there are no implications for teaching.

The procedure is as follows:-

  1. Complete the form, after discussin with those who will be affected
  2. Send the form to  the Head of Department who will seek the advice of teh Director of Undergraduate Teaching before signing and dispatching to the Old Schools.

Request for Sabbatical and other Long Leave

Officers requests for absences of more than fourteen nights during full term must be made to the General Board. Full details and the application form can be found here:- Leave of Absence.

The procedure is as follows:-

  1. Complete the form
  2. Get the College signature
  3. Send the form to Head of Department who will seek the advice of the Director of Undergraduate Teaching before signing and dispatching to the Old Schools.

Staff Review

The Head of Department's Office coordinates the Staff, Review and Development Scheme for all Officers and Academic Related Staff within the Department. Full details of the scheme, including relevant forms can be found at Staff Review and Development Scheme.
