Contract research staff (CRS), along with college research fellows and those on personal fellowships, play a vital role in the Department's research programme. The Department is keen that research staff do take full advantage of the whole range of activities and programmes which are available to help them develop their career to the next stage. These pages provide further information on the programmes within the Department of Physics and the School of the Physical Sciences.
We aim, through the research groups, to support new staff with a mentor. Brief guidelines on what mentoring might involve are here. Further support from the University can be found on the Admin website.
Details of mentoring support for staff, especially research staff, on particular issues relating to life in the Department or wider University can be found here.
Members of the Institute of Physics may find more detailed information in their booklet 'Working together: making the most of mentoring'
Continuing Professional Development
You should expect to discuss your own personal development programme as part of the management of your probabtion period and at subsequent Staff Review Meetings.
Principal Investigators may nominate research staff for additional increments. This exercise is carried out termly by the Head of Departments Office.
The award of additional increments depends on the availability of funds on the appropriate research grant.
Information from the January 2014 Workshop. Sources of funding are here. A copy of Otti Croze's presentation is here, and Silvia Vignolini's here.
Be sure to read the GUIDELINES for the appropriate scheme thoroughly. The Research Grants Administrator (Petra Kasmanova, grants at phy.cam.ac.uk) needs at least THREE WEEKS' notice of any application in advance of the closing date.
The Department held a workshop on 'Scientific Writing' in January 2014 as well as a 'Careers and Cakes' event for women researchers.
