Frequently Asked Questions

The University changed its layout in June 2008.

Below are a few answers to frequently asked questions.

1. I can't find ...

Most links under the old "Information about the Department" are now located in Staff and Student Resources. Alternatively, you may find what you need in the A-Z list located in the footer.

2. A link is broken / A page is missing / Something is mislabelled. Whom do I tell?

Please contact the Webmaster team should you find a problem. Please supply them with the url of the broken page.

3. Where have the Group website links gone?

Group website links can be found in their individual research sections on this website, as well as the A-Z.

4. Some of my old pages have the new header, but the content is not formatted correctly.

The website is built using PHP "includes" and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Some pages will inherit the new styles via these includes. However, old content will not necessarily be formatted in a consistent way as they may not conform to the new Style Sheets. Unfortunately the only way for your content to look correctly formatted is to update the content to conform to the new styles.

5. The webpage doesn't look "right".

  • These pages have been optimised for viewing with a screen resolution of 1024 pixels in width. Every effort has been made to allow for different resolutions, specifically screen widths of 800 pixels and 1280 pixels.
  • These pages have been optimised for viewing in Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3, Apple Safari 3, and Opera 9. Webpages may not look "right" if you are using an older browser (e.g. Internet Explorer 6 or lower, Netscape). It is strongly recommended that you update your browser for both security purposes and an improved browsing experience.

6. Where does the "Search" bar search?

The "Search" bar located in the top right area has been directed to search the Department of Physics website. It will also take you to the University's general search engine.

7. Why is the Cavendish logo a crocodile?

Visit the History section to find out more.
