Endowment of Chairs - Jacksonian and other established Chairs

- John Cockcroft
Nobel Prize winner for Physics in 1951
Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy
Over the next few years some major opportunities are due to arise to re-endow the distinguished Jacksonian Chair of Natural Philosophy and the Professorship of Physics held by Professor Pepper, and to convert existing lectureships into full Professorships. The creation of such posts is critical to innovation as it brings in new, world-class expertise and leadership in the general areas of Physics and Astrophysics, and makes available the resources to invest in personnel and equipment. Three examples of the types of initiative which would be supported include Quantum Optics, Quantum Communication, and Computing and Advanced Astronomical Instrumentation. These are all areas in which there is an opportunity for leadership underpinned by very significant existing strengths in the Department.
The introduction of new areas of research has always been one of the Cavendish's great strengths (see the History of the Cavendish for a retrospective on these landmark developments). For more information, please contact us.
